Fatehpur Sikri Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory) was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar during 16th century and was the capital of Mughal Empire. The shortage of water prompted Akbar to relocate his headquarters to Agra Fort. It is located in Agra district in the state of Utter Prasesh, India and is a World Heritage Site. The complex of monuments and temples, all in a uniform architectural style, includes one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid. The tomb ‘Salim Chisti Ka Mazar’ was built in honour of Sufi saint Salim Chisti by Akbar. The Emperor Akbar decided to construct it in 1571, after he was blessed with a son (who later becomes Emperor Jahangir) by the blessing of Sufi Saint Salim Chisti. The buildings of Fatehpur Sikri shows that indigenous craftsmen were used for the construction of the buildings, and influences from Hindu and Jain architecture are seen with a touch of Islamic style. All these palaces were built of red sandstone in the trabeate beam-and-post order, and composed of pillars, ornamental arches, brackets-and-chhajjas, jharokhas, chhatris, chhaparkhats, chaukhandis and so on. Fatehpur Sikri was the first planned city of the Mughals and the headquarter of Emperor Akbar.
