Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is located in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat in India. The Kalikamata Temple on top of Pavagadh Hill is considered to be a place of worship and continuous pilgrimage for Hindu believers. The historical monuments at Champaner consist of a series of fortifications, some of which originate on the hill top and end on the plains. The fortification is consisted of massive sandstones with intermediate bastions with beautiful balconies. Out of the massive ruins, five mosques are still in good condition. The most important among them is the Jama Masjid located east of the royal enclosure. The structures represent a good example of Indo-Islamic architecture, mainly in the Great Mosque or Jami Masjid, which was a model for later mosque architecture in India. This special style comes from the significant period of regional sultanates. The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park with its ancient Hindu and Jain architecture, temples and special water retaining installations together with its religious, military and agricultural structures represents the disappeared cultures. The area is spread over six kilometers covering the mounds of the 15th century Islamic capital city of Champaner and the sacred pilgrimage hill side fortress of Pavagadh. Pavagadh is famous for its Kali temple atop the highest peak of the hill, with dense forest towards the east and plain stretches of land to the west. Champaner is holy to the Hindus and the Jains, and there are small communities that continue to live within the ruins. Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park has gained the status of a World Heritage Site. The state government is looking to develop the site as a modern tourism destination. A tour to Champaner and Pavagadh would make an overlasting experience and is an ideal tourist attraction in the form of archaeological and ancient site. One can explore the 16th century hill fortresses that houses magnificent palaces, beautiful Indo-Islamic architecture, thick forests, and archaeological spots.
