Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary/Keoladeo Established in 1956 as a bird sanctuary and in 1981 as a national park, the Keoladeo Ghana National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is situated between Agra and Jaipur at Bharatpur in Rajasthan. The park is at about 4 hours drive from Delhi. Keoladeo Ghana National Park is the most fertile terrain for avian populations in India. The park with its high population of migratory birds observes two-thirds of its portion under water, while the rest covered in dry deciduous forests and wide-ranging grasslands. Bharatpur is the realm of avian fauna in India with its more than 400 bird species. Seeing around 50 to 100 bird species in a day is a common practice at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. The most relishing sight is to see the mysterious Siberian Crane wintering, as Bharatpur features only among the two identified wintering haunts of Siberian Crane. The park offers refuge to vast species of birds in its 29 sq-km of low lakes and woodland. Migrant birds splurge their winters ahead of getting back to their breeding grounds to the places like Siberia and Central Asia. Migratory birds at the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary can be large upto two meters as Dalmatian pelican, while can be small as the size of a finger like Siberian disky leaf warbler. Several others species of cranes, flycatchers, buntings, larks, pelicans, geese, ducks, eagles, hawks, shanks, stints, wagtails, warblers, wheatears, and pipits make it a delight for natural lovers, specially the bird lovers. From the diversity of birds, you can see the voracious birds like tawny eagles, spotted eagles short-toed eagles, imperial eagles and fishing eagle. Common Kingfisher, Colourful Kingfishers, graceful pelicans etc are some other specific varieties of birds here.
