Onam
Onam beautifully displays the prosperous cultural heritage, magnificent past and rich traditions of Kerala. The spirit of Onam catches the attention of millions from across the globe, great vivacity and fervour is shown by the high-spirited people of Kerala while celebrating the festival of Onam. The ten days festival begins with the Atham, and finishes to the biggest day called Thiru Onam. Onam has been the most famed festival of South India, and people celebrate it without caring for their social status, religion, caste and age.
The festival marks the return of King Mahabali, who was a generous demon king and once ruled the land. The first day of Onam is exhibited by elaborate floral carpets called Pookalam mark. Kerala hosts numerous events like sports and cultural events that rule for throughout the duration of Onam. Most of the events are hosted on the final day itself and known as Onakalikal.
According to the Malayalam calendar, Onam falls in the month of Chingam and lasts for ten days amid pomp and happiness. Onam is a harvest festival and adored extremely for its secular flavour. The festival reflects the faith of the Keralaites, their conviction in the glorious past and deep attachment with religion. The manner and a grand way of celebrating Onam bring out the Kerala people and their love for their culture.
Homes are decorated with fresh flower mats and new dresses are worn by people. Visiting temples is rituals, as people pray to the Gods and involve themselves in traditional dances such as Thiruvathirakali and Thumbi Tullal. Onam offers an ideal opportunity to Kerala to unleash its rich and well-established culture and tradition, and the people respond brilliantly to make the festival a success.
